In theory, it is an efficient tool that is useful. In reality, 62 civil-society organisations have come together to ask the Home Office to stop the rollout altogether.

A two-and-a-half-year margin of error is not a ‘rounding error’ when it comes to a system designed to protect vulnerable minors. It is the gap between a child who is being safeguarded and a child who is being detained with adults.

Of the cases in which there was a resolution to an asylum age dispute in the UK, 57% were successful in determining that the person involved was a child during the 12 months to March 2026. Some critics have pointed out that this is an inherent error rate in a process that is already prone to errors and that integrating an AI layer could make things worse.
